Dr. Hatim Hegab continues to contribute to the Faith page of the local newspaper, “The Stillwater News Press.” In his latest article, he talks about “Prophet Hūd and the people of ‘Ād”.
Prophet Hūd (peace be upon him) was sent by Allah to guide the people of ʿĀd, an ancient and powerful civilization that lived in the Arabian Peninsula, likely in the region of present-day Yemen or Oman. The people of ʿĀd were known for their physical strength, architectural achievements, and vast wealth, but they were also deeply immersed in idolatry and arrogance. They rejected the worship of Allah alone and indulged in oppression and extravagance. Hūd (peace be upon him) called them to monotheism, warning them of the consequences of their defiance and reminding them of Allah’s blessings. He urged them to abandon their pride and return to righteousness, but they mocked him and dismissed his message, saying that he was merely deluded.
Despite Hūd’s persistent warnings, the people of ʿĀd refused to repent. As a result, Allah sent a severe punishment upon them—a relentless, violent windstorm that lasted for seven nights and eight days, destroying everything in its path. The once-mighty civilization was reduced to ruins, and only Hūd and the believers who followed him were saved. The story of Prophet Hūd (peace be upon him) is a powerful lesson about the dangers of arrogance, the importance of faith, and the consequences of rejecting divine guidance. His story is mentioned in several places in the Qur’an, particularly in Surah Hūd, Surah Al-A‘rāf, and Surah Al-Ḥāqqah, emphasizing the fate of those who deny the truth and the mercy of Allah upon those who submit to Him.
