And [mention] when Abraham was raising the foundations of the House and [with him] Ishmael, [saying], "Our Lord, accept [this] from us. Indeed, You are the Hearing, the Knowing. (Quran 2: 127)

ICS History

The Islamic Center in Stillwater (ICS) has a rich history that began in 1951 as a modest place of worship established by a group of Muslim students. This idea originated among a small cohort of Muslim students who had come to Stillwater to pursue their studies at Oklahoma State University (OSU). In the 1950s, these students conceived the idea of creating a mosque and initiated a donation campaign to acquire a small house for this purpose.

With the successful purchase of the house, prayers began, marking the official establishment of the mosque. As OSU's reputation and academic excellence grew, more Muslim students were attracted to the university, resulting in a steadily increasing congregation. Many graduate students, accompanied by their families, joined the community, necessitating an expansion of the mosque's services.

In response to the rising number of attendees, a new fundraising campaign was launched, enabling the acquisition of an additional house that was annexed to the existing one. However, the aging structures required significant repairs, prompting the initiation of a new project.

Undeterred by the challenges, a dedicated group of individuals, some of whom are still active members of our community, worked tirelessly, contributing both time and money to support the fundraising efforts. Despite their significant contributions, many of these individuals prefer to remain anonymous, embodying the spirit of perseverance and dedication that has characterized the ICS throughout its history.

ICS New Facility

The Islamic Center in Stillwater's new facility stands as a remarkable testament to collective effort, demonstrating how small contributions can yield significant results. The costs of our new facility were covered by the generous donations of ICS members and many other brothers who received the call to support our project. Despite our members being primarily students with limited resources, their generosity and determination allowed us to realize such a dream.

From the outset, it was decided that the ICS would accept contributions as acts of charity, free from any conditions other than the intent to perform a good deed in this worldly life, with the hope of reaping rewards in the hereafter.

The completion of the project took nearly 10 years, as Muslims adhere to the prohibition of dealing with interest. The ICS had to collect the necessary funds first before commencing the work. Consequently, the new project was divided into smaller sub-projects to ensure progress based on the availability of funding. We initiated the endeavor in 2004 and persevered until we could joyously celebrate the realization of our dream in 2011.

Activities and Services

The Islamic Society of Stillwater (ISS) is a multifaceted organization with both societal and religious dimensions. Consequently, activities play a pivotal role in our planning and management. Children and familial events form the core of our activities programs, overseen by the social group responsible for their planning and execution. These activities encompass sports, picnics, social gatherings, movie nights, and public speeches, among others.

The Islamic Society of Stillwater (ISS) services extend beyond regular activities to include assistance with marriage celebrations (though legal marriage procedures do not take place in our facility), graduation ceremonies, and various familial celebrations such as engagements, Aqiqa ceremonies, award ceremonies, and more.

Further details about our services can be found in the dedicated Services section.
