Crafting this page proved to be an arduous task, a journey fraught with uncertainty and challenges. From the very outset, I grappled with the dilemma of where and how to commence this narrative. Permission to embark on this endeavor remained conspicuously absent, a conscious decision driven by the anticipation of a potential refusal, a certain refusal! But I am sure he will forgive me. He knows how stubborn I am when I make a decision. Additionally, the paucity of visual aids to complement the forthcoming narrative added another layer of complexity to the already formidable task at hand.
At the helm of the narrative stands a figure of unparalleled significance — The Islamic Society of Stillwater’s esteemed Director, Dr. Ahmed Abo Basha. It is no exaggeration to assert that he embodies qualities reminiscent of my father, a rarity, not merely in demeanor but in the very essence of how he lives and conducts himself. Meeting, working, and engaging in conversation with him have underscored the uncanny resemblance between the two.
Dr. Ahmed Abo Basha spearheaded the realization of a visionary undertaking, which we colloquially referred to as “the project.” I vividly recall the echoes of his impassioned pleas after each Jumuah prayer, wielding the microphone to implore and, at times, almost beg the congregation for donations. He knew we were all “poor students” yet his passion never faded. It struck me profoundly that such perseverance could only emanate from a genuine commitment to a cause greater than oneself; a sentiment affirmed by the fact that he never sought personal gain from these collective efforts.
His dedication to the project was unparalleled; a commitment that extended far beyond the rhetoric of his words. Dr. Ahmed Abo Basha labored tirelessly to manage the project, mobilize funds, and oversee the construction of the facility. Never once did I find him preoccupied with personal matters or engaged in discussions unrelated to the Islamic Society of Stillwater (until recently). Every interaction with him revolved around ISS’s affairs, a testament to his unwavering focus on the organization’s mission.
Notably, Dr. Ahmed Abo Basha’s journey began in Egypt, where he pursued studies in economics before transplanting himself to the United States in 1982. His journey culminated in the attainment of a Ph.D. in quantitative economics in 1990. It is worth noting that his academic path could have diverged significantly, as his passion for computer science in the 1980s could have led him to become a distinguished computer science engineer.
For many years, Dr. Ahmed Abo Basha has served as the director of the ISS, a role that he has fulfilled with commendable dedication. Even during periods of absence from the country, he managed to remotely oversee and guide every facet of ISS operations. His influence permeates every action and initiative undertaken by the organization.
With the completion of the “project,” more work emerges. It is nearly impossible for me not to notice Dr. Ahmad Abo Basha tirelessly tending to various tasks such as overseeing building maintenance, cleaning, rearranging, and moving things (check the Activities & “News & Media” pages). I have observed him frequently encouraging (and sometimes, again, almost begging) ISS members to assist him in cleaning the multipurpose hall, kitchens, or the prayer hall. Whenever the ISS organizes a dinner, you can be certain that he will be there from morning until the conclusion of the event, ensuring the venue is spotless once again. I am uncertain if I will ever be able to match his dedication and work ethic. I don’t think I will ever do.
The very genesis of this website, initially conceived as a modest online presence, can be attributed to Dr. Ahmed Abo Basha. What began as a simple idea evolved, under his persuasive influence, that he has requested from me many, many, times in the past, over many years, into a comprehensive resource for anyone seeking knowledge about Islam. I, initially hesitant, succumbed to his compelling vision and diligently worked for days, weeks and months to actualize this expanded vision you are currently pursuing.
In the process of chronicling these words, I sought to encapsulate Dr. Ahmed Abo Basha’s multifaceted contributions with visual representations, that is, pictures. To my surprise, the available visual documentation proved to be scarce. When I queried him for images, ostensibly for my collection, his response revealed a modesty befitting his character—he said he has only a few. The handful of pictures I did manage to unearth only serves to underscore the challenges of encapsulating the breadth of his impactful endeavors visually.
Expressing gratitude to you, Dr. Basha is a profound privilege. Working alongside you is not merely an honor; it is a privilege that extends beyond the professional realm to the cherished bond of brotherhood and friendship we share.
Please accept this work as a gesture of gratitude from your younger brother (I could say your son!).
